First I am cheap. Then I am unemployed. And lastly it is foolish to travel to the next big city to find a padded pelican case and pay for it as much as the kit costs, AND as much for gas money. So an old Tupperware brand food container was used. See, I do try for quality when I can!
So I started with placing a carton sheet on the bottom of the box, and continued by laying the items, and marking the dividers position. Then I removed the carton, made the dividers and glued them on. Then I proceeded with gluing thin packing foam sheet.
With a bit thicker packing foam I covered the bottom of the compartments and I also cut a covering sheet by the same material.
And I ended up with the following. Not pretty, but functional, and easy enough for your kid to do.

This is a continuation of two other projects the External Battery Pack for our handheld radios and an improvement on the Battery Eliminator we did for the Bao.
The Battery-Pack / Powerbank
This is a smaller size using two 18650 Lithium-ion rechargables to get the same voltage as the original Baofeng battery.
We have an affinity for the 18650 batteries, mainly because they are easy to handle, they lead the battery technology at the moment, can be cross loaded to other devices such as USB powerbanks, and we have a plenty of, since we are into flashlights too.

Luckily most handheld radios and some QRP Rigs (Low Power shortwave radios) have an alternate AA battery option. It is prudent to include a AA case for any radio you own, but DO TEST it first.
Do not make the assumption that all will work fine, there are two hidden bugs particular to any radio.
– Voltage incompatibility depending on the type of batteries you use.
– The radio dropping its power on AA batteries.
So in the past few days we have been testing our Baofeng with various kind of AAA batteries options. Also Kenwood has details enough on final power out in the manual of the TH-F6 handheld that we also own. To summarize both:

Current Handheld Radios (and other devices for that matter) have greatly benefited from today’s Lithium Ion battery technology.
There are definite advantages of this genre of battery chemistries; wether they may be Lithium-iron (LiFePO4), Lithium Polymer (LiPo), Lithium Manganese (LiMn), and finally Lithium Cobalt (LiCo) which is what modern radios use.

One of the greatest advantages is that Lithium batteries maintain their charge for long. Quality, name-brand, batteries will usually show above 90% capacity, a year after their recharge.
Then there is the advantage of not requiring to be drained down to zero for them to be recharged. In fact you can just recharge them at whim regardless of their remaining capacity.
